My love of the outdoors was cultivated as a child growing up surrounded by the Coast Range mountains of Oregon. Much of my time was spent riding mountain bikes, hiking and exploring the forests that cradled my childhood home. My interest in radio came later on when I inherited and begun restoring a Hallicrafters S-38 receiver that belonged to my grandfather, the original W3MBG.
Presently my interest in amateur radio is primarily in field / portable and QRP (< 5 watts) operation. I participate in Summits on The Air (SOTA) and operate exclusively portable from a variety of locations in my neighborhood when I can’t make it out to the wild. These activities mesh well with my passion for the outdoors: Hiking, backpacking and camping.
I enjoy Building my own antennas and radio equipment, and spend a lot of time in front of a soldering iron working on projects. My goal is to eventually have a 100% homebrew QRP station for my SOTA and backpacking adventures.
